Bali is now connected to the rest of the world via its first optical-fibre link, following completion of a submarine cable connecting it to Java. The link also brings Lombok, Kalimantan and Sulawesi online by fibre optics.
The US$100 million, 320Gbps JaKa2LaDeMa cable has been installed by the Japanese IT giant Fujitsu in partnership with German company Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH for PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom Indonesia).
Fujitsu said on Saturday: “This system is particularly important for Bali, which is of key commercial importance to Indonesia. In addition, the interlink within Kalimantan and the Kalimantan-Sulawesi link give businesses and residents not only their first high-bandwidth services, but also ensures the robustness of the entire network in Indonesia.”
Fujitsu has provided the overall system design comprising submersible repeaters, branching units, terminals and the associated services including the integration of repeaters with Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke’s cables.
Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke handled the installation and commissioning of the project infrastructure.
Indonesia has announced a second fibre-optic link will be built from Kupang in West Timor to Darwin, with work on the project starting in 2012, to create additional data capacity and provide a back-up to avoid service breaks such as that in 2006 when a major earthquake in China damaged the main data cable in Taiwan linking Indonesia with the US.
